Secondment at Baker Tilly Netherlands
How was it working for another Baker Tilly office in a different country?
It was definitely an incredibly interesting and enriching opportunity. While we share a global corporate culture with common goals and ambitions, each office has its own unique characteristics in terms of work style, organizational structure, and, of course, customs.
I was positively surprised by the collaboration and openness of the team. I especially appreciated the great atmosphere among colleagues, which translated into a smooth workflow where doubts were easily discussed, and different perspectives were openly shared.
How long did your experience last?
I spent a week and a half in the country. Although it was a short experience, it was an intense period that allowed me to get a close-up view of the work dynamics and environment of another European office.
Why did you want to take on this experience?
First, because I believe it is one of the greatest advantages of being part of an international network. In the end, we are colleagues located in different countries, and I was eager to meet them in person. We often work hand in hand when clients have questions regarding international mobility involving both legal frameworks, so I saw this as the perfect opportunity to connect in person with the colleagues I already collaborate with and to expand my professional network within the firm by meeting the rest of the team.
Of course, I was also interested in understanding how our services and internal processes adapt to the regulations of another country. This experience allowed me to dive into Dutch regulations and compare some key differences with Spanish legislation. It’s fascinating how some labor issues can vary from one country to another—and even helped identify areas for improvement.
On a more personal level, it was an ideal opportunity to enhance my skills, step out of my comfort zone, and demonstrate my commitment to the firm. Any initial fears I had completely disappeared by the end of the experience. I arrived not knowing anyone in the country, and I left with great contacts. Plus, I had never visited the Netherlands before, and witnessing sunsets with Utrecht Cathedral in the background is definitely an image no one should miss.
What would you highlight most about this experience? Would you encourage your colleagues to take advantage of secondments?
Absolutely! I truly believe that these opportunities should always be taken, even if the idea of going to a new place without familiar company feels intimidating at first.
From a professional standpoint, this experience allowed me to see my work from a fresh perspective and enhance the way I approach challenges. On a personal level, it was an invaluable learning experience that proved I can fully adapt to a different environment. I’m returning not only with new skills but also with friends I can’t wait to see again.
