Carbon Footprint Calculator for SMEs and Self-Employed - PIMEC

Baker Tilly Jun 21, 2024

We present to you PIMEC's carbon footprint calculator, a new online tool developed with the technical support of Baker Tilly Ecogesa.

What is the PIMEC calculator and who is it for?

The carbon footprint calculator is an online tool that is simple, rigorous, and free, specifically designed for SMEs and self-employed individuals. Its purpose is to quantify the impact of business activity on the climate, allowing users to define and prioritize actions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint, thereby contributing to the achievement of the goals set out in the 2030 Agenda.

What is the carbon footprint?

The carbon footprint refers to the measurement of the amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions generated by an activity or organization. These are gases that trap heat in the atmosphere and alter climate patterns, leading to global warming and the current climate emergency. The main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2), which comes from the burning of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) for energy generation, transportation, and industrial activities, as well as from deforestation and biomass burning.

How does the PIMEC calculator work?

Individuals and organizations interested in using PIMEC’s new calculator should follow these steps:

  1. Gather certain data about their activities, such as annual energy, water, and natural gas consumption.
  2. Visit the PIMEC - Carbon Footprint Calculator webpage and register.
  3. Enter the aforementioned activity data.

With this information, the calculator performs the carbon footprint calculation using the latest emission factors published by official sources. Unlike most online calculators, this tool includes not only Scope 1 and 2 emissions but also part of Scope 3, for the most common activities, providing a comprehensive and practical report.

Specifically, the different concepts included in each scope are:

- Scope 1: Emissions from the use of fuel for machinery, owned vehicles, and forklifts. Emissions from refrigerant gases and fire extinguisher refills.
- Scope 2: Emissions from electricity consumption.
- Partial Scope 3: Emissions from transportation (non-owned vehicles, distribution transport from the company to the customer and from the supplier to the company), business travel, remote work, water consumption, and the production and distribution of electricity.

The calculator allows for annual calculations and comparison of results from one year to another.

In summary…

Naturally, organizations that wish to calculate a complete carbon footprint or that have more specific emissions should consider using more advanced tools or seek the support of a specialized company like Baker Tilly Ecogesa.

Finally, we want to thank PIMEC for the trust placed in Baker Tilly Ecogesa for the technical development of the calculator, and of course, we encourage you to explore and use it.
